I am excited to return to Detroit, where I began my professional career as a teacher, and to play a role in the rebirth of this great American city.īut it is a bittersweet moment I have great admiration for so many of you and am proud of the accomplishments we achieved together since my arrival to Milwaukee in 2012 as the district's first Chief Innovation Officer. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors, I chair the volunteer engagement committee and serve as the Season of Caring Champion for Volunteer Engagement in the Campaign Cabinet. Many of you may not know of the work I have been engaged in for the last four years with the United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County. This is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to use the power of collective impact and equity to improve the lives of young people, their families and the communities in which they live. My last day as Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools is July 6, 2018. It is with mixed emotions that I share with you my appointment today as the President and CEO of the United Way of Southeastern Michigan. In the meantime, Driver sent the following letter this afternoon to announce her departure: There is no word yet on the search for a replacement for Milwaukee Public Schools' superintendent. She was named the permanent superintendent just a few months later. Gregory Thornton left to take over as CEO of Baltimore City Schools. This news was first broken in a report from Crain's Detroit Business, then confirmed in a tweet from the United Way for Southeastern Michigan.Īccording to the publication, Driver – who started her education career working in Detroit Public Schools as an elementary teacher, then later attended the University of Michigan to earn her masters in curriculum development – will take over the new position with the United Way in July.ĭriver was named acting MPS superintendent back in the summer of 2014, moving from her two-year position as MPS chief innovation officer after then-superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver will leave Milwaukee Public Schools this summer to take a position as president and CEO of the United Way for Southeastern Michigan.
